Advanced Teacher Training Curriculum
Elements:
- overview
- goals of this curriculum/training
- methodology
- instructors
- schedule and curriculum outline
- hours
Pre-Requisites
- For those seeking Advanced Teacher Training certification or Continuing Education, students must be certified meeting Yoga Alliance 200 hr requirements.
- For those seeking to gain deeper understanding of Yoga, one year of dedicated yoga practice is required.
Overview
This curriculum is a 300 hr curriculum meeting or exceeding the Yoga Alliance standards.
The curriculum has four mandatory elements:
- classroom study (contact hours);
- private mentoring (contact hours);
- assisting/observing (contact hours); and
- case studies, written assignments (independent study), and exams (contact hours).
These elements create 240 or more of the required contact hours under YA standards, as well as 60 or more hours of independent study.
This training also includes an optional element—lectures on given topics of philosophical, anatomical (physical or metaphysical), or methodological importance to the students involved in the training. It can also include additional private lessons—at additional cost—to mentor the student in his or her special interests. Private lessons for the purpose of teacher training also constitute contact hours.
This course is set up in a modular format. If the student completes 4 modules, then the student qualifies for certification as Advanced Yoga Teacher and can apply for Yoga Alliance’s 500 hr Yoga Teacher Registry. The courses can also be taken individually for at least 56 hours of Continuing Education. The modules can be taken in any order.
Goals
The primary goal of this teacher training is to give the student the opportunity to deepen his or her understanding and practice of yoga in every aspect of their lives, as well as to train them to be high-quality, safe instructors who can lead students to discover the joys of Yoga.
The goal is not to teach the individual student how to teach a particular method of yoga, but rather to develop his or her own voice and method of teaching yoga based on contemplation of the material presented in the classroom. Each student will have different interests, strengths, and weaknesses, and this program will encourage each student to delve into those deeply to discover his or her own yoga experience personally, as well as develop skills to offer that unique, creative perspective of yoga when s/he teaches.
Thus, the curriculum is set up to give the individual a firm foundation in the teachings of yoga—physically, energentically, philosophically, and spiritually.
Methodology
Those coming to teacher training are already grounded in the physical practice within their bodies and have experience with the subtle changes physically, mentally/emotionally, and spiritually that this practice brings. With this, those seeking advanced certification will also have completed a basic Yoga certification program from a variety of schools and perspectives.
This program gives the individual an advanced, in-depth exploration of the physical, energetic, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual aspects of yoga. The program emphasizes the dynamic anatomical and energetic alignments, modifications, and sequencing of postures for maximum therapeutic benefit; how to recognize a body's imbalances and develop a yoga program suitable to each individual in a group setting; the 5 levels of assisting as well as how and when to apply them; the 4 steps to prepare students for advanced postures such as inversions; how to integrate philosophical principles into the teaching of asana, pranayama, and meditation; and how to create a vibrant learning environment that encourages autonomy in the student’s practice for the ultimate transformative experience.
This course is also rigorous. As described in the overview, there are a number of elements to learn and a 4 hour practical exam. It is important that the student takes the material seriously, learning as much as s/he can during the time available and studying as well. Each element of this training is put in place to aid this process—particularly the writing assignments and mentoring hours. The lectures and possibility of private sessions for mentoring are also available to aid the student in his or her understanding, to fill in whatever gaps they may want or need, and to help them explore their own interests more deeply in order to develop their own voice.
This program provides a depth in an individual’s teaching practice. The purpose of the training is to provide more information and offer the individual teacher the opporutnity to develop his or her own voice from this depth.
Instructors
This course is instructed by Jenifer M. Parker. She is the director and primary instructor of this teacher training program. Jenifer's education and experience exceed the YA Experienced-Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT) 500 hr requirements.
On occasion, those teachers who have graduated from Jenifer’s program or are in one of her advanced programs (500 hr or therapeutic yoga training) will come to assist Jenifer at the training. They are not leading the program; they’ll work only when Jenifer is present in the classroom.
Schedule and Curriculum Outline
This outlines the daily schedule and hours for the teacher training for each 7-day module. In addition to those elements in the outline, students are responsible for scheduling mentoring hours and observing/assisting hours over the duration of the course. Students may opt to attend lectures, which will be scheduled according to the availablity of the teacher (Jenifer) and the students. Students may also opt to schedule private lessons with Jenifer, which also constitute as contact hours if for the purpose of teacher training.
All of the modules have similar elements. In each module, we will cover the 5 elements listed in the methodology but emphasize a different aspect of anatomy and it’s application to yoga as a therapeutic as well as spiritual discipline. This way, the modules can be taken in any order.
When a student signs up for a module, they are sent an extensive form which asks about their training and specific interest for the module. This form creates the basis for how each aspect of the module will be taught. While each element has the same title for each module--such as the 5 levels of Assisting--the practical explanation and application of this information will depend upon the group's interest as described in their forms. Thus, each module is unique.
